Métis Clothing - a Composite Style
This Métis smoked deer skin suit combines a European cut of coat, vest and pants with First Nations porcupine quillwork decorations. Note that the matching footwear of choice, was moccasins.
In the 19th century, Métis in turn influenced the Dene First Nations' colourful clothing and decoration.
'The young people model themselves in every way, from the cut of their hair to the style of their clothes, on the French-Canadian Métis who work at the English trading posts.'
Father Emile Petitot, 1876, in Emile Petitot
