Contrary to popular belief, Mont Saint-Hilaire was never a volcano because the upwellings of magma that created it stopped about 3 km below the surface of the earth’s crust. Mont Saint-Hilaire’s mineralogical wealth is recognized all over the world, and it has earned a reputation for the quality, quantity and diversity of the minerals that lie below it. Over 370 minerals have been identified so far. Nearly 49 minerals were discovered and identified for the first time, and some are found nowhere else on Earth. Research is still ongoing in the vicinity of the Poudrette Quarry.
