The Mont Saint-Hilaire Biosphere Reserve contains a great diversity of animal life. In 1960, the mountain was designated a migratory bird sanctuary. Around 200 species of birds can be found on the mountain, over 80% of which nest there. In addition, the mountain is home to about 30 species of mammals, including raccoons, deer, porcupines and foxes, 800 species of butterflies, 8 species of frogs, 4 species of salamanders, 3 species of snakes and 1 species of turtle. The Richelieu River is populated by several dozen species of fish, including the copper redhorse, a fish found nowhere else in the world.
