Bio

Dr. Gingras was Chief of Service, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Queen Mary Veteran's Hospital in Montreal, 1945-76. The experience he gained in treating veterans made him a strong advocate for the rights of the handicapped. He lobbied Government and social institutions to provide access for the handicapped, facilities for the disabled, and legislation to help integrate handicapped persons into the public school system and into various forms of employment.

Among Dr. Gingras' many honours were investment as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1967, and a Companion in 1972.

SideFx

It was his work with war veterans in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, that spurred Gustave Gingras to lobby for the rights of the handicapped. His motto summed up his position and remains a mantra for the handicapped today "Never give up, and focus on the abilities that remain, rather than on those that are lost."
