IV The Baptism
John the Baptist, a fiery preacher, who received long streams of pilgrims seeking salvation from their own sins, baptizes Jesus in his 30th year. This is significant as the 30th year is recognized as the proper beginning time for spirituality in one’s life. John knows that he is the prophet spoken of in the old book because he sees a sign, a dove flying overhead, and hears the voice of God speak to him. John then tells the people that a man has come to free the people of their bonds and bring them salvation.
Notes:
1. "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, every mountain and hill shall be brought low and the crocked shall be made straight, and the rough way shall be made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God." Luke 3 - 5,6
2. "And when he came up out of the water, immediately
he saw the heavens opened and the spirit descending
upon him like a dove; and a voice came from heaven,
"Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well
pleased." The spirit immediately drove him out into
the wilderness." Mark 1:10
