By 1947 there were a range of political organizations active and more than 70 newspapers published in Yiddish and many other European languages. Many displaced persons waited several years in these camps before being finally admitted into countries such as Canada, the United States and Palestine.

The language, historically spoken by Ashkenazic Jews of Central and Eastern Europe. Derived primarily from medieval High German dialects, and to a lesser extent from Hebrew and Aramaic.
