Dear Teacher:

Welcome to the educational component of the Vancouver Art Gallery's web site dedicated to the life and work of Emily Carr.

Here you will find three teacher's guides, intended to help you introduce students to the many aspects of Carr's work. These guides are designed for students at the following learning levels:

  • Elementary (K–7)
  • Secondary (8–12)
  • ESL Adult Learners

Each guide includes activities that will encourage your students to look at the artist in a new way. You will also find supplementary material designed to assist you in planning lessons quickly and easily.

We recommend that you use the other resources available on this web site whenever possible:

  • Reproductions of nearly 2,000 paintings, sketches, ceramic works and textiles by Carr
  • Photographs of Carr and the places where she sketched
  • Biographical information on Carr
  • A selected exhibition history and bibliography of texts about Carr

Should you wish to use colour reproductions of Carr's works, but do not have ready access to a computer in your classroom, please consult your local library for the following books:

Robin Laurence. Beloved Land: The World of Emily Carr. Vancouver: Douglas & McIntyre, 1996.

Doris Shadbolt. The Art of Emily Carr. Vancouver: Douglas & McIntyre, 1979.

We hope that you enjoy sharing your knowledge of Emily Carr with students!
