Before plastic was invented, human beings used ivory to make art objects, buttons, billiard balls, etc. The ivory came from the teeth and tusks of elephants, hippopotamuses and walruses. This practice is now frowned on because many of these species are threatened. Discover some pieces of ivory in our collection.
