Ornithologists agree that the best recipe for nectar is made from one part sugar to four parts hot water boiled for several minutes beforehand. The sugar must not be boiled to avoid creating a by-product. Adding red colouring is to be avoided. If you make a sweeter mixture, the hummingbirds will visit the feeder less often. If you make it less sweet, they will be less keen on it. There is no point in getting large feeders, since you have to change the contents weekly. If you notice that the mixture gets cloudy or becomes less clear, it’s due to fermentation - definitely time to change the liquid and clean the feeder.
